Josef Weisz was born in 1894 in Munich. After training as tailor and goldsmith, he studied at the Münchener Kunstgewerbeschule as student of Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke. He served in WWI and fabricated a war diary with his artistic impressions of Russia, France and Belgium. Later on, he focused more on graphic techniques and book illustrations. For some time he was active as sculptor. His early works were rather expressionistic.
